Tuna Cheese Melt

Makes 4 servings 

Ingredients

  • 2 (6 oz) cans tuna packed in water, drained
  • 1/2 cup seasoned breadcrumbs 
  • 1 egg, lightly beaten 
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped celery
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped onion
  • 1/4 cup light mayonnaise 
  • 1/4 teaspoon dried dill or 1 teaspoon fresh chopped dill
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon cooking oil
  • 4 slices cheese 
  • 4 whole wheat buns

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine tuna, egg, breadcrumbs, onion, celery, mayonnaise, dill, pepper, and Worcestershire. Mix well until fully combined.
  2. Divide mixture into four patties. Press patties together firmly. Note: Mixture will be soft and delicate. Refrigerate for 30 minutes to make patties easier to handle.
  3. In a large skillet, heat oil over medium heat. Fry tuna patties for 3-4 minutes per side, until cooked through and browned.  
  4. Add a slice of cheese to each tuna patty. Cover pan with lid and remove from heat and let sit until cheese is melted.
  5. Transfer patties to buns, and add your favorite toppings.
  6. Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container within 2 hours.
